Onwards…. Who am I to be an Artist

Gosh – almost 2 years have passed since my 1st excited posts and my question ‘Who am I to be an Artist? In that time both tragedy and joy has visited many of us. Please forgive me for my absence and join me once again on this creative journey.

In the last 8 months I’ve been experimenting with different mediums and exploring ways to connect with lots of lovely people through my art. During lockdown I spent time sketching scenes local to my home in Blairgowrie, Perthshire, Scotland. As you will see from the picture below these sketches have now become paintings and will soon be available online as greetings cards.

In December 2021 a wonderful synchronistic event happened, I was chatting to a few local shop owners regarding my artwork and the possibility of them stocking my cushions, cards and paintings when I was made aware of a pop up Christmas Emporium being arranged by a local lady, the owner of an online business supplying beautiful and unique gifts to visitors from all over the world. We quickly connected and realised that we wanted to collaborate. The Christmas Emporium was a wonderful success and there’s still more exciting news from Raspberryfieldsexclusive.co.uk to follow in my next post

My first market stall was held in April of this year and it was so lovely to connect with other artists and artisans and hear of their stories. I do hope to meet you at one of my next stalls, I’ll post dates and venues on my Facebook page Art By Debra Rice do join me there for updates. So I guess It’s time to revisit the question I asked in my previous post Who am I to be an Artist? and restart my creative journey, I do hope that you’ll join me over the next weeks and months.

Who am I to be an Artist? – Discovering my creative self

The following quote goes a little way to answering the question, who am I to be an Artist?

Our Deepest Fear

by Marianne Williamson from A Return To Love: Reflections on the Principles of A Course in Miracles

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us: it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

This is one of my favourite quotes and whilst you may substitute your own word according to your beliefs for the word God, I am sure that these words will resonate very strongly with you too.

As a side note, I have attempted to read A Course in Miracles but as you see from the photo of my books Marianne’s A Return To Love is a tad less chunkier!
